Cub Scout Ranks

“Ranks” is really a misnomer.  Each Scout is placed into a rank level den based on their age or grade.  If they complete the necessary number of adventures they will earn the badge for their rank level; however, even if they do not complete those adventures, they will automatically be promoted to the next rank level once the current school year ends.

Scouts do not have to earn, or even have participated in prior rank levels in order to join with their peers in the rank level appropriate to their age or grade.

In the Lion Program, Scouts work with their Adult partners (parents or guardians) to complete adventures intended to expose the Scouts and their families to the basics of the Cub Scout program as the Scouts work to earn their Lion Badge.

bobcatThe very first rank earned by every Tiger, Wolf, Bear or Webelos Cub Scout, no matter which grade or den they are in, is the Bobcat.

By earning the Bobcat rank, the Scout has demonstrated that they have a commitment to learning the skills and ideals taught by the Cub Scout program.  For the specific requirements of the Bobcat rank award, please click here.

WebelosBadgeSquareWebelosOvalFourth grade Scouts are members of a Webelos Den.  Webelos also work on Adventures and other requirements as they progress to earn their Webelos rank badge and prepare for their transition into Scouting BSA.  To earn the Webelos badge the Scouts will need to complete five required Adventures and two elective ones.  Webelos rank award recipients may wear either the diamond or oval versions of the award.

Upon completing fourth grade, the Webelos Scouts become members of the Arrow of Light Den, and will begin progress to earning the Arrow of Light Award, even if they have not completed the Webelos rank award.

Fifth grade Scouts are members of an Arrow of Light Den (sometimes also called a Webelos 2 Den).  As with Webelos, the Scouts will work on Adventures as they work towards the Arrow of Light rank award and joining Scouting BSA.  The Arrow of Light rank award is the only Cub Scout rank award that can be worn on the Scouting BSA uniform.  The Arrow of Light rank award requires the completion of 4 required and three elective Adventures.  There are 18 elective Adventures shared between the Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts, however, Adventures used to earn the Webelos rank badge cannot also be counted for the Arrow of Light rank award.

As long as the Scout is at least 10 years old, once they earn the Arrow of Light rank award, they may join a Boy Scout troop.  Once a Scout has completed the fifth grade, or is eleven years old, they may join a Boy Scout troop, even if they did not earn the Arrow of Light rank award.
